HAMPTON ROADS — Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters (CHKD) has announced that it will require patients who wish to be seen at one of its urgent care centers to arrive prior to 8 p.m.
Beginning Friday, Oct. 1, CHKD is asking that all patients who wish to be seen at one of its three urgent care facilities arrive prior to this time. According to Elizabeth S. Earley, media specialist for the hospital system, this new guidance is being implemented in light of the extremely high volume of patients whose parent/guardian wish for them to be seen for COVID-19 testing.
Additionally, CHKD has provided the following guidance regarding COVID-19 testing:
- If your child does not have symptoms but a test is still needed, find a community testing site, such as a local pharmacy. A location can be found by visiting the website for the Virginia Department of Health.
- If your child has been exposed to the virus but is not displaying symptoms, wait five to seven days following the exposure. If your child does begin showing symptoms, call the schedule an appointment with the child’s primary care physician.
- If your child is displaying symptoms of mild illness and you’re concerned that it may be COVID-19, call the child’s primary care physician to schedule an appointment.
- If your child is sick and you are unable to get an appointment with their primary care physician, visit the nearest urgent care center. If you are taking your child to a CHKD Urgent Care center, it is important to note that the child must be registered as a patient in order for a test to be performed.
- If your child has severe illness or is having trouble breathing, visit your nearest emergency department or call 9-1-1.

CHKD has three urgent care centers, with the only one on the Hampton Roads Peninsula located at Tech Center, 680 Oyster Point Rd. in Newport News. Adults wishing for their child to be seen at one of the centers can visit the website for approximate wait times or to save a spot for their child in the queue.
