ALBANY - The Albany Medical Center has temporarily closed two of its urgent care locations in Guilderland and Mechanicville as it seeks to "decompress" pressure at the hospital's emergency department.
Spokesperson Matt Markham said Albany Med, like many hospitals nationwide, is embroiled in staffing shortages and increased wait times that are requiring it to take "proactive measures" toward retaining staff, such as offering attendance rewards and referral bonuses.
"We will remain focused on providing the critical services unique to Albany Med, including those through our Children’s Hospital and level one trauma center, while working to develop thoughtful solutions to continue to care for our region," Markham said.
The closures come just a couple of days after the state's vaccine mandate for health care workers became enforceable and multiple Capital Region hospitals, including Albany Med, put hundreds of employees on leave without pay for their refusal to comply.
When asked how long the closures would last, Markham replied, "we’re continuously evaluating the situation."
"Albany Med is experiencing the same staffing challenges as other healthcare providers across the country, and those challenges predate the vaccine requirement," he added.
Albany Medical Center President and CEO Dennis McKenna told the Times Union roughly 204 of over 11,000 employees in the hospital system failed to get their first vaccine dose or an exemption by the deadline, leading to their suspensions. Of the 204, 10 were physicians, 48 were nurses, 29 were patient care associates and six were students.
