MACOMB (WGEM) -- Emergency management officials in McDonough County said they've got new tools under their belt to keep their communities safe in case disaster strikes.
McDonough County Emergency Services director Edgar Rodriguez said due to his FEMA training, he can now prepare first responders and community members on how to deal with mass casualty events like hazardous material spills involving pesticides and herbicides as well as chemicals spills from retail stores and supermarkets.
"Knowing exactly how to differentiate the capacities of those agents or chemicals into the person is one of the trainings that I went and it allowed me to do it as a trainer for not only the first responder for also so the community members later on," he said.
Rodriguez said the training is federally certified so he can now train individuals and agencies outside of McDonough County. He said that saves agencies from having to travel far away and incur those costs.
