ANN ARBOR, MI - The Salvation Army of Washtenaw County is in urgent need of toys for the upcoming holiday season and will look to collect gifts for area children during a toy drive this weekend.
The Salvation Army of Washtenaw County will host the toy drive from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 12, at 100 Arbana Drive in Ann Arbor. Donations can be placed in reception barrels outside the building. WAAM-AM radio will broadcast live from the Salvation Army lobby.
While the need increases in Washtenaw County every year, the COVID pandemic has made this year particularly challenging for our most vulnerable citizens, Salvation Army representatives said.
“This year, The Salvation Army of Washtenaw County has over 1,000 children that need toys,” Salvation Army of Washtenaw County Major Kris Wood said. “We’ve noticed a decrease in toys through our Angel Tree program and we need to do something more. We’re hoping the community will come together to rescue Christmas for kids in need.”
Approximately 515 families have applied fir assistance, needing toys for 1,288 children, Salvation Army of Washtenaw County Spokeswoman Jennifer DeGregorio said.
The Salvation Army is in need of toys for children age 0-14. Toys must be new, unwrapped and dropped off to the Salvation Army by Dec. 14, DeGregorio said.
“That is a huge increase from last year as we gave toys to approximately 700 children in Washtenaw County,” DeGregorio said. “COVID has resulted in many lost jobs throughout the county and is largely part of the reason for the increase.”
The Salvation Army Angel Tree program is a needs-based program for children ages 0 to 14 years old in Washtenaw County.
Angel Trees are located at Briarwood Mall, Sam’s Club and the Walmart in Saline. Shoppers can take a tag off of the tree and buy a toy listed specific to that child’s needs. Drop off locations are at Walmart and California Pizza Kitchen.
