The Philadelphia Phillies won last night against the Colorado Rockies! Yay… still they dropped the first two games of a four-game set that should be a sweep. The Phillies, yet again, have managed to get hopes up and then flounder their opportunities.
Sense of Urgency
The Phillies need to win more games to keep up with either the Wild Card or top of the division. Both of these opportunities are totally doable in order to make the playoffs. Joe Girardi and other Phillies players know they need to play like their lives depend on it or it is going to be the same old story of September collapse and going 82-80 or 80-82.
Phillies Phans dread another downtrodden season of complete and utter failure by this organization and players, but there is hope, they just need to find it.
Opportunities Ahead
The Phillies have one of the easiest schedules to finish out the season, but somehow someway they are trying to make it harder on themselves. Realistically, this team has the potential to go on a tear and make the playoffs. Harper, Miller, and Wheeler are pumping on all cylinders to get this team to October, but how are they going to do it?
The Phillies need to win every series they play after this Rockies series in order to make the playoffs in either the division or wildcard. That means taking ⅔ from the Mets, Atlanta, Cubs, Orioles, and the dreaded Marlins, as well as, taking ¾ from the Pirates. The Phillies as a whole need to show up, or I am going to be writing an article about off-season moves that need to be made.
I probably will be writing about that regardless…
Moral of the Story
Joe Girardi said that teams with the highest OBP make the playoffs. Obviously, that is not exactly true because currently, the Washington Nationals are in the Top 5 of OBP in the league (They are not making the playoffs).
So, yes it is true that if you get on base a lot you will win games a theoretically make the playoffs, but it is going to take more than that alone. However, in his defense, the Phillies are ranked 14th overall on that list which is not that comforting for a team with October aspirations.
Vince Velasquez has been released from the Phillies, so going with the bullpen game is going to be scarier than initially anticipated
Regardless of the “Highest OBP teams will make the Playoffs” theory, these teams also have good pitching. All the first-place teams and aspiring teams have great pitching to back their hitters up and vice versa.
On the other hand, the Phillies have half of that equation with bursts of effectiveness and non-effectiveness.
All in all, step up Phillies because Bamboo Brad, MV3, and Wheels are not enough to have a horse in this proverbial race.
