Photo: Jeff Wheeler/Associated PressThe mayor of Minneapolis declared a state of emergency Wednesday after a man’s suicide sparked fresh unrest in the city, months after George Floydwas killed in police custody.
In his declaration, Mayor Jacob Frey said he requested assistance from Gov. Tim Walz to help restore calm in Minneapolis, as the unrest is more than city authorities can handle. Mr. Frey said he requested help from the National Guard.
The mayor also imposed a 10 p.m. curfew, which will be lifted at 6 a.m. Thursday. A curfew violation could bring a fine of up to $1,000 and imprisonment of up to 90 days, the declaration said.
Mr. Walz later said he would mobilize the National Guard—including a military police unit—and planned to send 150 Minnesota State Patrol troopers to Minneapolis.
According to local media, violence and looting broke out downtown after rumors circulated online that a man’s suicide was a police shooting. The Associated Press reported that the man who killed himself was a Black homicide suspect.
“What our city needs right now is healing,” Mr. Frey said at a news conference. “We do not need more destruction. We do not need property damage. That is unacceptable in every way shape and form.”
Medaria Arradondo, the Minneapolis Police Department’s chief, sought to dispel rumors about the unidentified man’s suicide.
“We had a homicide earlier this evening. And then we had someone create a self-inflicted gunshot wound and kill themselves. This was not an officer-related incident,” he said.
The incident, was captured on city surveillance video and released by police within 90 minutes, AP said. It nonetheless sparked protests and looting in the downtown area.
Tensions over race and policing have been heightened in Minneapolis after the Memorial Day killing of Mr. Floyd. He died after Minneapolis police restrained him with a knee to the neck while responding to an alleged forgery in progress. His death sparked numerous protests in Minneapolis and beyond, as well as violent clashes with police.
“I will not allow to add more trauma to a city that’s still grieving from May 25,” Mr. Arradondo said Wednesday.
