NEWARK, NJ — University Hospital in Newark recently rolled out two, new additions: a "virtual urgent care center" and a voter registration kiosk.
Earlier this month, the hospital and Rutgers New Jersey Medical School (NJMS) announced the launch of their virtual urgent care center. Patients can connect with clinicians trained in emergency medicine using any video-enabled communication device, including a cell phone.
The virtual urgent care center is accessible through a HIPAA-secure video chat. It's available between 7 a.m. and 11 p.m., seven days a week.
To get started, a patient should call (973) 972-5066 to speak to a patient access representative, who will schedule a visit and send a link that can be accessed from a computer, tablet, or smart phone. During the scheduled time, the patient and doctor will speak on a secure video platform, allowing for privacy and confidentiality, hospital administrators said.
Prescriptions, if needed, can be sent electronically to the patient's preferred pharmacy. If the clinician determines a visit to the emergency room is needed, the patient may be advised to visit the emergency department in-person.
"The virtual urgent care service is designed to treat non-life-threatening illnesses and injuries including colds, rashes, infections, and sprains," University Hospital noted. "In a serious emergency, please call 911 or head to the nearest emergency department."
"We look forward to serving our community in a new and innovative way that combines medical expertise with state-of-the-art technology," said Jonathan Green, executive director of the University Hospital emergency department.
"Virtual Urgent Care allows our patients to access superior medical care online, from the comfort of their own home," Green said.
Last week, University Hospital also announced another new addition: a voter registration kiosk.
The kiosk – which is located in the emergency department waiting area – was launched in partnership with the VotER initiative. The hospital is the first in New Jersey to participate.
The kiosk allows patients and visitors the opportunity to register to vote in New Jersey using an electronic portal that walks patients through the voter registration process and prints out their registration application.
"I applaud University Hospital for being the first in New Jersey to join this creative initiative and welcome its partnership with our state's Division of Elections," New Jersey Secretary of State Tahesha Way said.
"We are really excited to bring this opportunity to our patients," said Robert Adrian, a Rutgers New Jersey Medical School resident at University Hospital and the driving force behind bringing VotER to the hospital.
"We hope VotER will propagate a virtuous cycle, improving civic health and health efficiency in our community," Adrian said. "Empowered voices lead to a healthful democracy."
