New Hyde Park–based PM Pediatrics—a privately held, nationwide provider of urgent care for children—is working with local schools and those in other states on reopening efforts.

"The notion of children coming back to school has been a very controversial one," said Dr. Jeffrey Schor, co-founder of PM Pediatrics. "However, we know that schools are critical to our infrastructure, and kids need to be there."

Currently, PM Pediatrics is working with school districts in Nassau and Suffolk counties and in Brooklyn to provide support for their respective reopenings, Schor said. It's also in talks with individual schools in the city as well as in New Jersey, Philadelphia, Maryland and Washington, D.C.  PM Pediatrics operates in 14 states.

"There definitely is a lot of interest," Schor said. However, there also is a lot of variation in what support different schools and districts are looking for. Some want testing and other Covid-19-related services. Others are seeking longer-term relationships, post-pandemic, focused on the ability to provide more comprehensive care on-site.

Forging relationships with schools has always been of interest for the company, Schor said. To date, that has included a telehealth pilot program at a school system in Anchorage, Alaska, for students who need acute evaluations. Now, the pandemic has kick-started a greater focus on doing so.

The company can provide services including physician-led webinars, access to Covid-19 testing and telehealth services similar to the program in Alaska, which provides school nurses with a device that allows them to virtually connect with pediatricians, who can evaluate and treat children in real time.

From a pediatrician's perspective, there is concern about the negative effects of the current crisis on children beyond acute care needs, Schor said. "We've seen a delay in immunizations, which can lead to other potential complications down the road."

Additionally, pediatricians are trained to understand the psyche of young patients, he noted. And the pandemic stands to have a significant impact on how kids view the world.

"We feel so strongly about our ability to understand the whole package," Schor said, "and why it's so important that we play a major role."

Physicians from the Somos network in the city have also continued to call for the greater involvement of pediatricians in school-reopening efforts.
