COLONIE — A new urgent care center run by WellNow Urgent Care and St. Peter’s Health Partners has opened in Latham, the organizations announced Monday.
Located at 800 New Loudon Road., the new facility provides treatment for non-life threatening injuries and illnesses. Appointments aren’t required, though patients can visit the facility’s website at WellNow.com to check in online and view wait times. It will be open daily from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m.
The center will also provide COVID-19 testing — both for diagnostic purposes and for antibodies that indicate a past infection.
“Together with St. Peter’s Health Partners, we’re proud to open this new center,” said WellNow Urgent Care President John Radford. “Communities in Latham, Colonie, Troy and beyond have a new option for urgent care services and can count on us for immediate medical treatment. We look forward to further assisting the Capital Region and serving as a dedicated COVID-19 testing resource.”
In the news release announcing the new center, WellNow noted that it’s willing to work with schools and colleges to establish a COVID-19 testing protocol as part of their reopening process. Anyone interested can contact WellNow at Occmed@WellNow.com.
WellNow is one of a number of Capital Region-area urgent care chains that opted out of a federal reimbursement program designed to make COVID-19 tests free for the uninsured while accepting millions of dollars in virus-related relief funds.
The federal government agreed to reimburse urgent care chains roughly $45 for every COVID-19 test made available to the uninsured if they agreed to participate in the reimbursement program. Instead, WellNow is charging patients $150 out of pocket for a diagnostic test and $100 for an antibody test, as well as requiring and charging for a short visit with a physician’s assistant beforehand. While the for-profit chain has declined to reveal the cost of those visits, a Times Union analysis of payment policies at local testing sites found they had charged patients $150 to $200 for a visit.
WellNow, which partnered with St. Peter’s in 2019 to operate urgent cares in the Capital Region, has more than 40 locations in New York and Illinois. The Latham location is their fifth location. Another is expected to open in Saratoga Springs later this year.
