Gov. Phil Murphy declared a statewide state of emergency in New Jersey beginning early Tuesday as Hurricane Isaias was expected to hit the region with powerful winds and heavy rainfall.
Murphy’s order goes into place as of 5 a.m. Tuesday, the governor announced on Twitter. While there were no mandatory travel restrictions, Murphy urged residents to stay off the roads. Damaging winds, flooding and thunderstorms were forecasted to batter much of the state from daybreak through the evening Tuesday.
All state officers will be closed Tuesday, Murphy said. Outdoor structures, including tents setup for dining during the coronavirus pandemic, should be taken down, the governor’s tweet said. The state’s emergency operations center was also activated in response to the approaching storm.
“Hurricane Isaias is expected to impact the state with severe weather conditions, including strong winds and heavy rainfall,” the governor added. “The safety of our residents is our main priority, and we urge everyone to be informed of local weather conditions and to stay off the roads.”
Isaias late Monday strengthened from a tropical storm back into a hurricane as it moved toward the East Coast, according to the National Hurricane Center. Maximum sustained winds of 85 mph were reported as the powerful weather system was expected to make landfall late Monday near border between South and North Carolina.
Earlier on Monday, the National Weather Service warned residents to “take this storm seriously” as Isaias was expected to dump up to 6 inches of rain in the northern portions of the state. Wind gusts along the coasts of New Jersey and Delaware could reach 65 to 75 mph with inland gusts of 65 mph possible.
“The main threats with this system are heavy rainfall resulting in widespread flash flooding as well as some river flooding, as well as strong and damaging winds, especially near the coast. In addition, minor to potentially moderate coastal flooding, and dangerous marine conditions will occur,” the weather service said in an advisory.
Murphy’s state of emergency declaration came as New Jersey remained under both a state of emergency and a public-health emergency issued because of the coronavirus pandemic. States of emergency orders can mobilize various agencies, bring specific executive powers and allow the state to seek disaster aid.
