With a wildfire burning west of Fort Collins, the Larimer County commissioners upped county fire restrictions and ratified a disaster declaration on Tuesday.
“The conditions are there,” Sheriff Justin Smith told the commissioners during an administrative matters meeting Tuesday morning. “You just have to look outside to know that it has been hot and dry for the last couple of weeks. … The obvious part that we all see is the smoke coming down from Cameron Peak. We’re just absolutely tapped on resources.”
Upon Smith’s recommendation, the commissioners implemented more serious fire restrictions, which will stay in place in the unincorporated areas of the county for a full month, through Sept. 18.
The ban on open fires replaces earlier restrictions that the county adopted in July; it prohibits all open fires and burning including gas camp stoves, grills and cooking fires.
The ban also includes: welding and other torches outdoors; smoking outdoors on trails, parks and open spaces; fireworks; incendiary devices including sky lanterns and exploding ammunition and targets; fires in stationary masonry or metal fireplaces; and charcoal or wood pellet grills, according to Larimer County.
Propane grills and emergency signal devices like flares are still allowed.
The same restrictions are in place in the Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests, which is where the Cameron Peak Fire is burning.
The commissioners also ratified an emergency declaration that Steve Johnson, chairman of the board, had signed on Sunday and extended it through Sept. 16. The action will allow access to additional state resources, if needed, for the Cameron Peak Fire, which is expected to last for several weeks.
The declaration will “make sure that we are prepared and ready for anything that might come from this wildfire, from the Cameron Peak Fire, and to ensure that we can get state resources that are needed,” said Lori Hodges, the county’s director of emergency management.
The county is not planning to ask for state resources yet but could need to in the coming weeks, Smith said, adding, “It will help us in our planning process.”
